Plaque

A rectangular white plaque on a rectangular backboard printed with French and English inscriptions. Printed in color, are the images of the crossed flags of the US and France on the top, the insignia of the 9th Air Force on the bottom left corner, and the 406th Fighter Squadron on the opposite. On the background is a greyscale picture of a P-47 Thunderbolt. The plaque was inaugurated on October 17, 2021.

On January 22, 1945, aboard a Republic Thunderbolt P47-D #42-27603, 1Lt Wieczorek took off at Tantonville (Y-1) airfield in Meurthe-et-Moselle, when it had a mechanical failure. He couldn't get his fighter/bomber down because he was flying over the Vosges, for a bombing mission to the Colmar Pocket in central Alsace, France. He managed to get out of his plane, but flying at too low altitude, his parachute did not have time to open. He was unfortunately found dead by river bathers on the outskirts of the village of Mortagne. His plane during this time continued its flight for a few moments before crashing into a surrounding hill.
