B-29A (44-62276) Memorial
Details:
Substantial remains of the aircraft form a debris field on the high slopes of Succoth Glen 2.5 miles west of Lochgoilhead in Argyll. Marker
A memorial cairn bearing a rectangular metal plaque with a brown background that is inscribed in English in white lettering.
The plaque contains the commemoration message and lists the names of all 20 crew members aboard the plane who died in the crash. The memorial was built in 1993 by the cadets of 2296 (Dunoon) Squadron, Air Training Corps.
On the morning of 17 January 1949, US Air Force Boeing B-29 Superfortress 44-62276 was en route from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire to Keflavík, Iceland, on the first leg of its journey home to Smoky Hill in Kansas. With twenty crew and passengers on board, she was accompanied by another B-29 on its journey north.
As the two aircraft traveled further north, the weather began to deteriorate. The pilot of the second Superfortress made the call to return to RAF Scampton and await better conditions. 44-62279, however, remained on course.
No cause was ever determined for the accident although icing while flying in clouds was seen as a contributory factor to the probable loss of control which resulted in the aircraft diving into the ground and plowing into the side of Stob na Boine Druim-fhinn.
No one survived.
