<< Back to Prenton

Details:

On the east side of the road.

Monument

Two black metal plaques affixed on a rough-hewn stone pillar. The plaques are positioned on the center of the stone, one above the other. They are inscribed in English in yellow and white lettering. The first plaque bears the 8th Air Force insignia and the commemoration message while the second plaque lists the names of the 24 servicemen who died in the airplane explosion. The monument is enclosed with 24 bricks surrounding the base.

The B24H was a part of the 445th Bomb Group (703rd Bomb Squadron) based in Norfolk, which had suffered heavy losses after a raid on Kassel, Germany. On October 18, 1944, the Liberator was said to be transporting crews from Northern Ireland to Norfolk, a common route over Wirral and down the spine of the UK - a flight that would usually take two hours.

But the men never reached their destination and the cause of the crash was never found. Some believed the bomber had been struck by lightning, while others suspected a gas leak from the war-weary bomber. Desperate attempts were made by the emergency services to reach the crew, but they became bogged down in the field and it was later found that all the men had died either in the air or on impact.
