US-Soviet Elbe River (Spirit of the Elbe) Link-Up (69th Infantry Division) Memorial

In the traffic circle in plain view of the castle across the river. Monument
The memorial includes three sandstone monuments with an inscribed brass plaque attached to the front; three flagpoles stand behind each stone representing the United States, Russia and Germany.
The memorial remembers the link-up of US (273rd Infantry Regiment , 69th Infantry Division, 1st US Army) and Soviet Forces near the end of World War II along the Elbe River.

Robertson Patrol 1600 (4:00 PM). The scene at the damaged bridge over the Elbe in Torgau about 1600, April 25, 1945. Americans 2nd Lieutenant William D. Robertson and Pfc Frank Huff, Hq 1st Bn 273rd Inf Rgt climbing the steel skeleton of the blasted bridge over the Elbe River in Torgau to meet Soviet Lieutenant Alexander Silvashko and Sergeant Nikolai Andrejew, 58th Guards Division.

Guards Division, 1st Ukrainian Front
This resulted in creating the “SPIRIT OF THE ELBE” dedicated to the peoples
Of all nations resolving their differences without war and should be an eternal
Beacon to light the future courses of all nations working together for the
Mutual benefit of all people.
