Daniel Haley Mural
Details:
On the exterior wall, beside the sidewalk.
A 10-meter long mural which adorns a whole section of the wall of the Airbus Saint-Éloi factory. Made by Toulouse artist Korail, this mural pays tribute to Daniel Haley, a 20-year-old American aviator, US Air Force lieutenant, shot down by the Germans while flying over the city of Toulouse and whose plane came crash into the Saint-Éloi plant. On the left corner of the mural, is a quote from Montalembert « Les longs souvenirs font les grands peuples » which means "Long memories make great people". Painted below it are open hands letting a dove out in a deep blue starry sky.
On the center is a dedicatory plaque affixed on the wall flanked by US and French flags on either side. Below the plaque are the graffiti words «Liberté, égalité, fraternité » which means "Liberty, equality, fraternity" with the painting of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning plane on its right and "Fight for freedom" words on the left side, above the clouds.
On the right side corner, the words « TOULOUSE SE SOUVIENT » which means "TOULOUSE REMEMBERS" are painted above the portrait of a young American aviator wearing flying gears. An airbase illustration with a compass was painted on the left side next to the portrait, and the words "a young hero" were painted below the aviator's shoulder. Though the mural is for Daniel Haley, the model that was used for the portrait is William Overstreet, Jr.
