South Cove Church War Memorial Cross -B24 (42-51241)

<< Back to South Cove

Details:

In the churchyard, on the approach to the church.

Monument

A celtic cross on a trapezoidal block base. It commemorates the South Cove men in World War I and II as well the American airmen who lost their lives in the parish in March 1945. The American who lost their lives were the airmen or the crew of the B24J 42-51241. The aircraft was apparently caught in propwash, and was thrown over on its back on the way back from mission 920. The crew did not have time to escape the aircraft before it started to break up, and it crashed close to St Lawrence's church, South Cove with all crew lost.
