American Volunteer Monument

<< Back to Place des Etats Unis - Paris

Details:

Inside the Thomas Jefferson Square. About 50 m south of the Washington and Lafayette Monument. Monument This statue was dedicated by the President of the French Council of State Raymond Poincare on July 4 1923 to the Americans who had volunteered to fight in World War I. It features a bronze statue on a plinth and was inspired by the soldier and poet Alan Seeger. Inscribed on the back of the plinth is Seeger's name along the 23 others from the French Foreign Legion. Two excerpts from Seeger's Ode to Memory of the American Volunteers Fallen For France are also found on both sides of the statue.
