3rd Infantry Division Memorial Cogolin
Details:
On the right side of the entrance, next to the parking area. Monument
This monument is located in the same town where General de Lattre de Tassigny had set up his command post on August 17, 1944. The monument is composed of vertical and rectangular, separate steles with plaques attached on them. In front of the left stele, is a plaque commemorating the 3rd Infantry Division and their carved insignia above it. At the foot is a marble plaque. On the right side are the words "ROCK OF THE MARNE".
The other stele contains a tribute to the resistance. Below it, is a plaque with the lines of famous speech by General de Gaulle in June 1940.
The monument has a street sign that makes it easier to
locate.
Monument Text:
Plaque on the right stele:
victoire. Alors, elle retrouvera sa liberté et sa
grandeur. Tel est mon but, mon seul but!
English translation:
To all the frenchmen
France has lost a battle!
but France has not lost the war!
A makeshift Government may have capitulated,
giving way to panic, forgetting honour, delivering
their country into slavery. Yet nothing is lost!
Nothing is lost because this war is a world war.
In the free universe, immense forces have not yet
been brought into play. Some day these forces will
crush the enemy. On that day, France must be present
at the victory. She will then regain her liberty and
her greatness.
That is my goal – my only goal!
That is why I ask all Frenchmen, wherever they
may be, to unite with me in action, in sacrifice and
in hope.
Our country is in danger of death. Let us fight
to save it.
LONG LIVE FRANCE !
