Royal Air Force Bodney or more simply RAF Bodney is a former Royal Air Force Station located 4.5 miles (7.2 km) west of Watton, Norfolk, England.
Airfield F-141, originally built as an RAF Bomber Command airfield during 1939-1940, Bodney was transferred to the United States Army Air Forces in the summer of 1943. Placed under the jurisdiction of VIII Fighter Command of Eighth Air Force, it was primarily the home of the 352d Fighter Group, the "Blue Nosed Bastards of Bodney". The unit briefly moved to Belgium in December 1945 due to the Battle of the Bulge, although it returned in April. It was closed after the 352d returned to the United States in November 1945.
FROM AMERICAN AIR MUSEUM IN BRITAIN:
Before the Americans arrived Bodney was a grass-surfaced airfield. So when the 352nd Fighter Group arrived with heavy P-47 Thunderbolts, work was carried out to strengthen its roads and runways with steel matting, concrete and tarmac. Nissen huts also had to be quickly built to accommodate up to 1,500 American personnel. The 352nd flew P-47s Thunderbolts until March 1944 when they converted to P-51 Mustangs. There was one fatality at the airfield on D-Day. Taking off in poor visibility, one P-51 Mustang took the wrong heading and crashed into the control tower, killing the pilot. Between December 1944 and April 1945 only a skeleton staff remained at Bodney while most of the Group moved to Belgium to assist in the Battle of the Bulge.
Major George Preddy, the lead P-51 Ace of WW2, was the Squadron Commander for the 328th Fighter Squadron. He was killed when shot down during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 while flying “Cripes a Mighty 3.
