On October 12, 1944, B-26G (43-343393) piloted by 2LT Thomas Hughes, was part of a mission to of the 17^thBomber Group, 37^th Bomber Squadron flying from their base in Poretta, Corsica, to bomb a road bridge just south of Bologna.  On the return trip, the airplane crashed for unknown reasons, but possibly due to Anti-Aircraft fire. The entire crew perished in the crash (Missing Aircraft Report {MACR} 9061). The marker was placed here in 1996.
