A marble headstone with the image a an American flag engraved above John Mahoney's name; along side fellow Belgian resistance members killed by the enemy here on September 6, 1944.


Staff Sergeant Mahoney was a crew member on the B-24 41-29306 named "k for King" (also known as "Marez-ee-Dotes") and was shot down on a mission to Koblenz on April 22, 2944.  SSG Mahoney was rescued by the local resistance.  He and other crew members fought with the Belgian resistance until September 6, 1944 when he was killed near this spot by the enemy along with 6 other resistance members. 

S/Sgt Robert M. Varty was also killed while fighting along the Resistance in Arras, France in May 1944.

A memorial to the B-24 is located at site Spiere-Helkijn, Belgium.
