MuseumThe Museum of the Great War (Museo della Grande Guerra) focuses on the World War 1 battles that occurred on the mountain peaks about Timau. Running from main pass to Austria – Passo Monte Croce Carnico – the several peaks (1800-2400 meters) above where the location of fighting between the Italian Army from May of 1915 to October 1917. The museum also includes open air museums of reconstructed battlefield on the peaks above – tours are offered by the museum. Timau is also the location of one of the Italian Military Ossuaries – burial location for thousands of soldiers. Lastly, the museum remembers the Carnic Porters (Poratrice Caniche)- woman who carried supplies to the front lines during the war. The group of women were recognized for their bravery in the early 1990s.
Of US interest, the second floor of the museum includes information on the German occupation of Carnia during the Second World War. The Germans employed Ukrainian Cossacks to occupy Carnia which they did with great effect. The museum also includes US and British efforts to support the local Partisan movement to counter the occupation of this important line of communications from Germany.
The staff is extremely knowledge and offers tours to the local mountaintop battlefields and to the Ossuary.
