A simple white plaque, inscribed in red French text naming the square in memory of the American poet Alan Seeger. Seeger fought here with the French Foriegn Legion (Régiment de marche de la Légion étrangère {RMLE})

Seeger's best known poem is called : I have a rendezvous with Death.

I have a rendezvous with Death
At some disputed barricade,
When Spring comes back with rustling shade
And apple-blossoms fill the air
