The marker is a plaque mounted to the Roman era wall, just 10 feet above the ground next to three other commemorative plaques. 

A white marble inscribed plaque about 3 feet high by 5 feet long.

The marker is dedicated to the First Special Service Force (FSSF) which was a joint US-Canadian Special forces unit and was considered the precursor to the modern Special Forces. The FSSF was also known as the “Devil’s Brigade” and a movie entitled the same, starring William Holden.

 The plaque is devoted to the soldiers from the First Special Service Force, The Devil's Brigade, which took part in the liberation of Rome – claiming to be the first to enter the Eternal City.

The plaque, was placed on the 40^thAnniversary of the liberation of Rome, on  4 June 1984. The location of the plaque is significant as it is placed in the Piazzale Ostiense, hanging on the Aurelian Roman Walls (next to Pyramid of Cestius), where significant Italian resistance battles occurred 9-10 September 1943- The Battle of Porta San Paolo. The plaque is located next to three Italian plaques commemorating the Resistance efforts in this area.

The plaque is also not far from the British Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery – Rome War Cemetery (Via Nicola Zabaglia, 50, 00153 Roma RM) where Canadian soldiers of the FSSF lie.

The plaque also commemorates the battles where the Devil's Brigade took part in Italy: Monte la Defensa (3-9 December 1943); Monte Maio (or Majo) (6 January 1944); Monte Sammucro (25 December 1943); Anzio (February 1944); Rome (June 1944).
