The museum, Memory Park of San Pietro, is located in a renovated building of the old town of San Pietro. The museum is a tour of San Pietro beginning with is foundation in the 10thcentury to the day before the great Battle of San Pietro; citizen’s lives during the battle; and, the battles of San Pietro and Montelungo. There are exhibits dedicated to the US 36thInfantry Division, Texas National Guard, and to the famous movie director, John Huston, A US Army Captain at the time, who created the movie classic “The Battle of San Pietro”. The museum visit ends with a viewing of the 33 minute movie.
The open-air portion of the of the museum is the old town of San Pietro, left the way it remained after the battle in December 1943. The citizens of the town decided to move downhill and form a new village closer to the main road, SS 6 and railroad rather than rebuild. As a result, a visitor can walk through the town as it was left the day after the battle as well as see the caves the townspeople lived in during the fighting in 1943. The open-air portion of the museum also offers views over valley below San Pietro all the way to Cassino where the 5thArmy fought so hard in 1943 and 1944.
