7th Armored Division Plaque

<< Back to St. Vith Town Hall

Details:

This plaque is located on the Hauptstrasse side of the St. Vith town hall. It is located just above the glass enclosed board that displays the town's public announcements.  Plaque This black metal plaque is mounted on the concrete surface of the St. Vith town hall. The middle of the plaque features the insignia of the 7th Armored Division while the rest of the plaque contains an English inscription that describes not only the role of the 7th Armored Division but also the strategic importance of the town.

During December 1944 the 7th Armored Division arrived all the way from the Netherlands in order to rescue infantry units who were trapped in bitter combat. Later that month, however, the 7th and the other American units withdrew from St. Vith. Only a month later, the 7th Armored Division channeled their fighting spirit and reconquered the town on January 22, 1945.
