551st Parachute Infantry Battalion Plaque
Details:
The plaque is located approximately 15 meters off of the road which leads to the area of the Dairomont site. It is situated behind the two flower pots and just to the left of the bench. Plaque This dark bronze plaque is attached to a tall smooth gray field stone and depicts the insignia of the 82nd Airborne Division (top left) and the 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion (top right) as well as a small representation of the Airborne Parachutist Badge (top center). The plaques French inscription tells the story of how Company A of the 551st PIB engaged in rare and intense bayonet combat during the Battle of the Bulge. The 551st PIB suffering heavy losses in the area around Dairomont, particularly in Rochelinval, where the unit lost nearly 70% of its force yet managed to capture the town and deprive the German forces in the area of an important crossing point of the Salm River.
