5th Infantry Division Stele of Brieulles

The 5th Infantry Division Stele of Brieulles is located on the north side of D123 between the road and a set of train tracks. Marker This white concrete pillar rests on a plain concrete base and features an inscription describing the importance of the place and two representations of the 5th U.S. Infantry Division's Red Diamond insignia, a smaller one above the inscription and a large one that is visible to oncoming traffic. The 5th Infantry Division trained with French troops during June 1918 and entered combat immediately after their training ended. They played a crucial role in both the breakthrough of the the St. Mihiel salient as well as the German line along the Meuse, the very breakthrough which this monument represents.
