Monument
A parachute-shaped stone marker honoring the memory of LTC Robert G. Cole, who was killed near this spot by a sniper while directing close air support. A small information sign is also in the clearing.

LTC Cole was a Battalion Commander in the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment in the 101st Airborne Division. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership in a Normandy Carentan attack. He was killed in action during operation Market-Garden on September 18, 1944, when he was shot by German sniper fire on the terrain behind the memorial .

LTC Robert G. Cole is buried at the American Cemetery in Margraten, plot B, row 15, grave 27.

Vol moed en met gevaar voor eigen leven, verdergaand dan zijn plicht, voerde Lt. Col. Cole op 11 juni 1944 zijn battalion aan bij een aanval op de laatste 4 bruggen op de weg naar Carentan (F) toen zijn eenheid onder vuur kwam te liggen door vijandig geweer-, machinegeweer-, mortier- en artillerie vuur. Hij nam het geweer en bajonet van een gevallen soldaat en leidde zijn eenheid over open terrein door een kogelregen naar de vijandige posities in de eerste bajonet-aanval van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Zijn heldhaftig en dapper optreden inspireerde zijn manschappen en de vijand werd verslagen.

Lt. Col. Cole's uitstekende leiderschap verdient de grootste lof. Hij is hiervoor geëerd met de hoogste onderscheidingen: de Medal of Honor, het Purple Heart en de French Croix de Guerre with Palm. Lt. Col. Robert G. Cole heeft de actie in Carentan overleefd. Hij sneuvelde tijdens operatie Market- Garden op 18 september 1944 toen hij op het terrein dat zich achter u bevindt werd doodgeschoten door een Duitse sluipschutter. Lt. Col. Robert G. With valor and undaunted courage, at the risk of his own life, above and beyond the call of duty, on June 11 1944 Lt. Col. Cole was personally leading his battalion in a charge on the last four bridges on the road to Carentan (F) when his unit became subject to heavy rifle, machine gun-, mortar- and artillery fire. He took the rifle and bayonet of a fallen soldier and led his unit over open terrain through a hail of bullets to the enemy positions in the first fixed bayonet charge of World War II.
