LTC Gordon K. Smith and PFC R.B. Lewellen Plaque
Details:
Located on the outside wall of a stone building in the center of Gourbesville. The building used to be a makeshift aid station used by the Germans. Plaque The plaque makes LTC Gordon K. Smith and PFC R.B. Lewellen honorary citizens of the town of Gourbesville. The two American Soldiers from 82nd Airborne who parachuted into Gourbesville during the Normandy Invasion PFC Lewellen landed near Gourbesville with his rifle but far away from his intended drop zone. In fighting in Gourbesville, a bullet struck PFC Lewellen's left hand and shattered the buttstock of his rife. Badly wounded, he was captured by the Germans and received treatment to amputate his hand. To ease the pain, the German doctor gave him a quart of wine. Another American Soldier who had been shot in the stomach was taken in by the German doctor and given similar treatment. Many years later, it was discovered that this other Soldier was Major Gordon K. Smith who told the same story that PFC Lewellen had. In 2009, LTC Smith attended a ceremony making him and PFC Lewellen honorary citizens of Gourbesville. PFC Lewellen had passed away only a few days before, but his son was in attendance.
