When Robert Stowe Gill was born on March 25, 1880, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, his father, William, was 38 and his mother, Blanche, was 29. He had one brother and two sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Captain in Company K, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on March 25, 1880 and is now buried in Suresnes American Cemetery, Suresnes, France.

Gill, 18th Infantry "Displayed exceptional heroism during the battle of July 18-22, 1918 near Soissons. He led his company against the enemy with skill, courage and exceptional gallantry until he himself was mortally wounded."' Died 23 September 1918 at American Red Cross Hospital 3, Soissons, France, of wounds received in action. Buried in AEF Cemetery # 34. Also received French CDG Medal.
