"When George Baldwin McCoy was born on October 12, 1892, in South Orange, New Jersey, his father, Walter, was 32 and his mother, Katherine, was 31. He had two brothers and two sisters.
He came to Raleigh from Washington and entered the State College as a student, making brilliant record as a football player. After leaving college he engaged in farming near Raleigh, but gave up his work to enter the training camp when America entered the war.
He received his commission as First Lieutenant at the first officers' Training camp at Oglethorpe,went over with the first contingent, a member of the company to which the late Harry Watson belonged. He was in an infanty company but was transferred to the commissary department after a finger was wounded by a hand grenade.
He died from his wounds received in battle during World War I on July 20, 1918, at the age of 35, in France and is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
