Ernest Earl Bickford entered the military service in Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company H, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared ""Missing"" on July 20, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as CPL E L BICBFORD.

Awarded Distinguished Service Cross, citation:
"Ernest E. Bickford, corporal, Company H, 16th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in acton near Soissons, France, July 18, 1918. Without assistance he attached an enemy machine gun which was located in a tree and dislodged the gun, but was himself killed while performing this courageous duty. "
