When Bert B. Lonning was born on November 3, 1894, in Thor, Iowa, his father, Kolbein, was 25 and his mother, Ingeborg, was 24. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company L, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 22, 1918 at the age of 23, but, his current burial is unknown. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as PVT B B LORNING CO L.
