George W. Vaccaro was born on 1921. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a First Lieutenant in the 87th Fighter Squadron, 79th Fighter Group. He entered service in Massachusetts. Pilot of the P-47 Thuderbolt serial number 42-27962 X90 which took off from Serragia, Corsica on a mission to Valence Airdrome, France. "Lt. Vaccaro, flying X90 made one pass at field and on second pass his aircraft caught fire, probably flak fire. Flying at 200 feet he called on his R/T that he would attempt to gain altitude and bail out. Climbed to 1000 feet, barrel rolled and then aircraft split S'ed and dived into ground and exploded in the middle of Valence Airdrome, at 1605 hours. No parachute was observed." This statement was made by Benjamin B. Cassiday, Jr., 1st Lt, 87th Fighter Sq, 79th Fighter Gr, attachment to Missing Air Crew Report, War Department, Headquarters, Army Air Forces, dated 28 July 1944.

According to one of our sources, the precise location of the crash was in the commune of Malissard, France.
