From Ancestry.com:

G W was 6'4" tall. He had brown hair and brown eyes. He was an easy-going person and slow to anger. When he was about 4 or 5 years old, he had Palegra, a disease resulting from too few vitamins. (Palegra was common at that time because flour was just beginning to be bleached, which took out the vitamins. When this was discovered, vitamins were added again to the final product.) He made a full recovery. The letters G W are not initials for any name. His mother, Lydia Litchford Creelman, said his name was just the letters G W. When he enlisted in the Army they said he had to have a name and he said, "I guess just put down George Washington". G W's brother, Orvil, said the letters were taken from George, who was his grandfather on his mother's side and William, his father. He was inducted into the Army on May 8,1942 at Camp Hood, Texas. The reception center was Camp Walters, Texas. He served with the 8th Division and 753rd Tank Battalion.

He participated in the North African Campaign and saw action at Anzio, Italy. He was killed by schrapnell in France during WWII and is buried 27 miles west of Cannes, France in the Rhone American Cemetery @ Draguagnan Cemetery, Plot D, row 6, grave 1. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, The Amerian Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, the Expert Badge w/Rifle Bar, and the Bronze Star Medal based on the award of the Combat Infantryman Bage) - all posthumosly. G W's name is listed on a monument to the men of Howard County, Texas, who died in WWII. The monument is located on the East side of the Howard County Court House in Big Spring, Texas.

At the 1996 Forsan High School Reunion, in Howard County, Texas, a display was exhibited as a memorial to the Forsan students who had lost their lives in the war. G W was amoung the honorees. Barbara Creelman Beadles, niece to G W.
