SSgt Francis E. Byrne, belly gunner of the B-17 42-29537, took off from station 121 Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, UK on a bombing mission over the Rouen train junction. They were shot down by German fighters. Byrne was the only crewmember reported to survive and become a Prisoner of War (POW). He died of his wounds on April 8, 1943 but his body was never recovered.
