John Lawrence Wilner was born on jan 22, 1919 in Washington, DC. He was the son of Joseph A. Wilner and Ida Berkow Wilner. John was educated in Central High, St. Albans Prep, and Harvard University in Boston, Mass. He served in Company A, 709th Tank Battalion as a Captain during World War II. He rose in rank from private to Captain within 1 year. CPT Lawrence was killed in action during the liberation of Saint Briac sur Mer in Brittany while advancing with his troops into enemy held ground and was given a Bronze star medal for his actions, in addition to his Silver Star. His remains were repatriated to Washington DC in July of 1949.
