Comments:

1st Lt Newton B. Davis Jr., pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt 42-28465, took off from A-16 Brucheville on an armed reconnaissance over Argentan. He was shot down at 1600 by flak. His parachute got stuck in his wing, dragging him to the ground. Accounts vary as to what happens next, but he was either lynched, shot, or kicked to death when the Germans got to him.
