2nd Lt William J. McGowan, pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt 42-76368, took off from station 407 in Thruxton, Hampshire, UK on a low-level ground support mission over the Saint-Lo area as part of the D-Day landings. His plane was shot down by anti-aircraft fire at 1700, crashing in flames into a field near the town of Moon-sur-Elle. His remains were never found and he is listed as MIA as of 2011.
