Lt Charles Wilburn Scott Hulland took off from the USS Kasaan Bay at 0925 as part of VF-74 Hellcat squadron’s bombing mission during Operation Anvil Dragoon in his Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat 58307. Near Saverdun he was hit by flak and bailed out at 5000 feet around 1130. By some accounts he died that day, but he successfully evaded capture and returned to the UK on 09/06/1944 per E&E report #1407. He was later KIA in the Pacific theater, but declared Missing in Action on April 24, 1946. His name is memorialized at Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Philippines.
