1st Lt William S. Marchant took off from station 157 Raydon, Suffolk, UK in his P-47 Thunderbolt 42-76501 on a bombing mission over the Rennes airfield. While strafing empty hangars, his group ended up over a light AA battery. Marchant radioed in that his plane was on fire and was going to jump. This was the last anyone heard from him over the radio. He died when his plane crashed after being shot down from flak at 1520.
