F/O Ernie Jim Dickenson, co-pilot of the B-17 42-3042 “Cabin Heater”, took off from station 138 Snetterton Heath, Norfolk, UK on bombing mission no. 61 over Rennes. Towards 1615, an Me-109 shot the bomber down, sending it hurtling into a high tension line, exploding the partially evacuated plane.
