Flight Officer Benjamin Hill Higgins, Jr. was flying the P-38 Lightning 43-28409 when he took off from site A-11 in Saint Lambert on a reconnaissance mission over Lisieux. Spotting a target of opportunity, he dove to strafe a German truck, but clipped a tree and tore his horizontal stabilizer, causing him to crash into the ground at 08H30.

He has a cenotaph located in Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery, Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, Georgia.
