Moses Taylor Jr., of Kisco, NY, fought with the 9th Infantry Regiment beginning in December 1917. He was a beloved leader of his men, described as leading through his heart and with exceeding card. He was mortally wounded in a raid on a German machine gun nest in an old mill near the town of Vigneulles, France. He rounded up 20 volunteers for the task and lead the group across "no man's land". He had almost made it to the objective when a German jumped out of a foxhole and shot him. There is a statue of him on the same town's "Monument aux Morts" In addition, his wealthy family donated three bells to the town church in a 1922 ceremony and gave the town $5000 for reconstruction after the war.
