Herman Lee Merritt was born on April 18, 1921, in Forsyth, North Carolina, the son of William. He had two brothers and four sisters. He was enlisted in the Army on November 16, 1942 and was stationed at Camp Croft, SC before shipping out. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Sergeant in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on April 16, 1945 and is now buried in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, King, Stokes County, North Carolina, USA.
