When Gilbert R. Stiles was born on November 24, 1914, his father, Columbus, was 43 and his mother, Mary, was 32. He had five brothers and three sisters. He enlisted in the Army on March 4, 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Sergeant in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on February 28, 1945 and is now buried in Sherrill Cemetery, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA.
