When Peter Gus Polizzo was born on August 3, 1921, in New Haven, Connecticut, his father, Joseph, was 23 and his mother, Norma, was 18. He had four brothers and four sisters. He enlisted in the Army on September 18, 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division.
