When Valentine J. Maciag was born on February 14, 1925, in Garfield, New Jersey, his father, Joseph, was 23 and his mother, Stella, was 20. He attended Garfield elementary schools. After his graduation from Garfield High School in June 1943, he joined the Army. He trained at Camp Shelby, Miss., before going overseas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on April 16, 1945 in Harz Mountains, East of Osterode Am Harz, Germany and is now buried in Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial, Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands.
