William Andrew Bates was born on October 31, 1929, in Vinemont, Cullman County, Alabama. He was the son of Herbert Theodore Bates Sr. He was married to William A. Bates. He served in Company G, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, as a Private First Class during the Korean War.
PFC Bates was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on July 19, 1953. He was presumed dead on July 19, 1954. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. He also has a cenotaph in the Bates Cemetery, Guthery Crossroads, Cullman County, Alabama, USA.
