Ellis Barnes was born on April 19, 1929, in Mount Gay, Logan County, West Virginia. He served in the 3rd Military Police Service Company, Prisoner of War Service Unit 3, 8120th Army Unit, as a Private First Class during the Korean War.

PFC Barnes died on June 7, 1953, when he was returning from a fishing trip, when a large wave washed him overboard near Mosulp'o, Cheju-do, South Korea. He is now buried in the Beautiful Zion Cemetery, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, USA.
