Harold Jarvis Atherton was born on April 10, 1911, in Alabama. He was the son of James Peyton Atherton and Lula Jarvis Atherton. He served in the 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class and Low Speed Radio Operator during the Korean War.

PFC Atherton was captured by enemy forces while engaged in combat in North Korea during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir on December 3, 1950, and later died in captivity on May 5, 1951. He is now buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama, USA.
