Aaron Richard Abercrombie was born on October 26, 1922, in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. He was the son of James R. Abercrombie and Mattie Abercrombie. He was married to Louise F. Abercrombie. Aaron was a veteran pilot of World War II. After his discharge, he attended the University of Alabama for a short time, but he returned to the military and was eventually stationed in Japan. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to the 39th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 35th Fighter Interceptor Group, 5th U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

On November 1, 1950, 1Lt Abercrombie was serving on temporary duty with the 6132nd Air Control and Warning Squadron. That day, he was part of a tactical control party attached to the 6th Republic of Korea Division operating near the Manchurian border. The mixed group of U.S. and South Korean soldiers was ambushed by Chinese forces south of the Chosin Reservoir. In the opening burst of machine-gun fire, three American servicemen, including First Lieutenant Abercrombie, were killed instantly. He was listed as Missing in Action during a mission on November 1, 1950, and was presumed dead on October 22, 1951. His remains were not recovered. 1Lt Abercrombie's name is memorialized in the Courts of the Missing in Honolulu Memorial.
