Russell John Nelson was born on April 24, 1897, in Michigan. He was the son of John Nelson and Annie Marie Johnson Nelson. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1919. He served in the 101st Infantry Regiment, 101st Division Philippine Army, as a Colonel during World War II.

After the fall of Bataan, Col. Nelson was captured, taken prisoner, and held at PW Camp #2 in Davao, Mindanao. He was reported Missing in Action and officially declared dead on December 14, 1944. His name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.
