James Henry Coleman was born on September 8, 1916, in Greene Township, Parke County, Indiana. He was the son of Ray E. Coleman and Myrtle Ruby Scott Coleman. He was married to Ella M. Coleman. He served in the 423rd Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Ball Turret Gunner of B-17G #42-31388 during World War II.
On February 11, 1944, the aircraft was shot down while on a bombing mission to Frankfurt, Germany. The aircraft departed at 07:00 from Station 111 in Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK. While flying over the Oise department in France, near La Cour de la Bruyère in the commune of Campremy—approximately 9 kilometers northwest of Saint-Just-en-Chaussée—it was struck by enemy flak and subsequently attacked by fighters. The crew bailed out by parachute around 13:30, except SSgt. Coleman, who was killed during the attack. It is also believed that the aircraft may have been running low on fuel at the time of the crash.
SSgt Coleman was reported Missing in Action and officially declared dead on February 11, 1944. His name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial, Neuville-en-Condroz, Arrondissement de Liège, Liège, Belgium.
