When George Vincent Thompson was born on May 6, 1920, his father, Codie, was 28 and his mother, Mattie, was 21. He had two brothers and one sister. He enlisted in the Army on January 27, 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He went overseas on July 1942. He won heroic achievements in operations against the enemy in Normandy, France. His truck loaded with ammunition became stalled in deep water. He stayed with the truck securing the ammo for the U.S. even though he was wounded. He was in direct combat with the enemy for 269 days and received several bravery awards including the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. He died on February 28, 1945 and is now buried in Linden Cemetery, Linden, Sumter County, Florida, USA.
