When Earl George Pohl was born on April 22, 1926, in New York, his father, Henry, was 42 and his mother, Florence, was 39. He had one brother and two sisters. He enlisted in the Army on August 17, 1944 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents. Earl served as a Private First Class, U.S. Army during World War II. He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war. Earl's tombstone notes that he was "Killed In Action", however the Army records note that he "Died Of Wounds" received in action during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
