When Vernis Eugene Ketchersid was born in 1926 in Tennessee, his father, Cyrus, was 20 and his mother, Sally, was 23. He had three brothers and two sisters. He enlisted in the Army on June 3, 1944 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Vernis served as a Private, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He resided in Harford County, Maryland prior to the war. Vernis was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
