James Arthur Studer was born on July 15, 1920, in Hennepin County, Minnesota. He was the son of Edward A. Studer and Mary V. Kaufmann Studer.

James served in the 419 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. James was one of seven crew members on Halifax JD210 VR-S also known as "Happy Valley Sally". On the night of Sep 5/6, 1943, they were part of a six hundred-plus bomber stream targeting Mannheim and nearby Ludwigshafen. During the raid, their plane was brought down; it crashed on the east bank of the river Altrhein, 3 km west of Huttenheim, Germany.
