Harry served in the 419 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was one of seven crew members on Halifax JD210 VR-S also known as "Happy Valley Sally". On the night of September 5/6, 1943, they were part of a six-hundred-plus bomber stream targeting Mannheim and nearby Ludwigshafen. During the raid, their plane was brought down; it crashed on the east bank of the river Altrhein, 3 km west of Huttenheim.
